Geological Acquisitions / June 2012

Four new acquisitions add to the Robert Smithson Personal Library, all with a focus on Geology:

Treatise in Sedimentation, Vols. I & II by William Twenhofel
Field Geology by Frederic Lahee
The Geological Evolution of North America by Thomas Clark & Colin Stearn

From the aforementioned tome by Clark & Stearn: a look into 20th century ideas of dinosaurs. A bit of marginalia lets us know that dinosaur means "terrible lizard."

The Los Angeles Southwestern College Library deaccessioned this gem, and it eventually found its way to the Personal Libraries Library. It will not be deaccessioned again.

Personal Libraries Library

The Personal Libraries Library is a subscription, lending library located in Chelsea, Vermont. The Library recreates and reconsiders the personal libraries of artists, philosophers, scientists, writers and other thinkers & makers.

The collection commenced with the personal libraries of Maria Mitchell, the 19th-century astronomer, librarian, educator and suffragist and Robert Smithson (1938-1973), the influential artist, writer and thinker. The Library then expanded to include the personal libraries of writer, critic, and journalist Italo Calvino (1923-1985); short-story writer, translator and librarian Jorge Luis Borges (1899-1986); and poet, civil-rights activist & gardener Anne Spencer (1882-1975).

Members can check out books for an initial three-week period, with additional renewals possible. The Library resides in Chelsea, VT and has periodic Reading Room Hours. Please see Membership and Reading Room information below.

Personal Libraries Library Press

The Personal Libraries Library Press is an in-house publishing venture that prints all PLL paperwork, special projects and more. Printed matter from the Personal Libraries Library offers differing investigations of the Collection as well as questions the role of books, libraries, and archives in the production of meaning & understanding. Members of the Personal Libraries Library receive annual to biannual printed works from the Press.

The Library and Press are both run by Abra Ancliffe.
